Volunteering in the Haliburton Highlands provides an incredible opportunity to meet wonderful people, be involved in many exciting projects and acquire a broad range of knowledge about the community.
I've had many tremendous experiences with some pretty fine folk helping to make our community better.
I've been a founding board member of:
-
Highlands Media Arts (now Sticks and Stones Productions);
-
Canoe FM; and
-
The Friends of St. Stephen’s Church.
Preserving local history is my passion, and my involvement in local heritage includes:
-
Creating and developing the Stanhope Museum at the request of Stanhope Council. This included moving a building, learning museology, committee and policy development, cataloguing artifacts, developing and mounting exhibits, outreach, marketing, research, photography and so much more!
-
Creating Stanhope Heritage Day;
-
Developing, researching and writing the Stanhope Heritage Driving Tour; and
-
Developing, managing and championing the restoration of the Hawk Lake Log Chute.
Other committee and board involvement includes:
-
Stanhope Station 80 Support Crew (taking refreshments to firefighters on long calls);
-
Haliburton Highlands Trails & Tours Network (multiple committees, events and positions);
-
County of Haliburton Economic Diversification Committee;
-
U-LINKS Centre for Community Based Education;
-
Stanhope Recreation Committee;
-
Stanhope Waste Management Committee;
-
Haliburton Highlands Literacy Program;
-
Stanhope Fun Day Committee
-
I was also a staff member and then multi-year freelance writer/photographer for The Times, Minden (now the Minden Times)
